How to Add Color Splash Effect to your Photo in GIMP (Step by Step Tutorial with images)
Black and White photo with selective area in color gives an awesome effect to your photo. We call it Color Splash Effect. So, in this tutorial I'll show you how to add color splash effect to your photo using GIMP. We are using three layers in this tutorial original photo as a background layer which will be converted into black and white, foreground color as middle layer and duplicate of the original photo as a top most layer.

Step 1

How to Add Color Splash Effect to your Photo in GIMP (Step by Step Tutorial with images)
  1. Launch GIMP
  2. Drag and drop your desired photo in GIMP or go to File Open Select Your desire photo Open.

  1. Select the photo in the Layers dialog box.
  2. Duplicate the photo by clicking on Duplicate icon or go to Layer Duplicate Layer.
Tips :
If the Layers dialog box is not activated in your window, then go to Windows Dockable Dialogs Layers.

  1. Hide the upper layer by clicking on Eye icon. This makes the background layer visible.
  2. Select the background layer and go to Color Desaturate
  3. Select any option from the desaturate dialog box as per your need and click on Ok button. For this tutorial I'm selecting lightness option.

After finishing the above steps make Top layer visible by clicking on Eye icon.

  1. On the top layer, right click and select "Add Alpha Channel" or go to Layer Transparency Add Alpha Channel.

  1. Active Top Layer by clicking on it.
  2. Select Eraser Tool from Toolbox and erase all except the area which you want to colorize.
  3. Zoom in the image by selecting Zoom Tool from the Toolbox.
  4. Double click on the Eraser Tool to activate the Tool Options. From the Tool Options adjust the Brush Size and erase the unwanted area.

Tips
If the Toolbox is not activated in your window, then go to Tools New Toolbox or go to Windows New Toolbox.

You will see the clear cut image, but in fact it is not clear.
  1. Select the background Layer and click on Create a New Layer icon. Select Foreground color option from the New Layer dialog box and click on the OK button or go to Layer New Layer Foreground color OK.

  1. After finishing the above steps Zoom In the photo and select the topmost layer from the Layer dialog box.
  2. Adjust the Brush Size and clean the photo.
  3. Hide the middle layer or delete it.

In order to save the file for further use go to File Save As Select your desired folder Save.

You need to export file in order to save it as PNG or JPEG format. Here's how you can save Images as PNGs in GIMP.
